Understanding how compatible mortar can help older stone buildings manage moisture.
Many traditional stone buildings were constructed using lime mortar. Unlike some hard cement mixes, suitable lime mortars can allow moisture to move and evaporate through the joints.
In older, softer stonework, overly hard cement pointing may contribute to trapped moisture, flaking stone faces or frost damage. Not every cement joint needs removal: we assess the wall before recommending work.

Mortar should be suitable for the stone and exposure conditions.
Traditional walls often rely on breathable materials to manage moisture.
Correct joint profiles and mortar colour help preserve character.
Removing hard mortar can damage stone if undertaken incorrectly.
